PRODUCT INFORMATION
Owatrol Oil is a clear, penetrating protective coating that helps preserve the natural beauty of weathered corten steel while reducing further oxidation and rust run-off.
For the best results, allow your corten steel to develop its desired rich, rusted patina before application. If you'd like to speed up the weathering process, a rust accelerator can be used prior to sealing.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
For the best results, apply Owatrol Oil once your corten steel has developed the desired rust patina. Sealing the steel too early may prevent the natural weathering process from fully developing. If you'd like to accelerate the process, a rust accelerator can be used before applying Owatrol Oil.
-
Owatrol Oil penetrates the rusted surface to form a clear, protective barrier that helps preserve the natural appearance of weathered corten steel. It also helps reduce further oxidation and minimise rust run-off onto surrounding paving and other surfaces.
-
Owatrol Oil is designed to preserve the existing weathered finish rather than stop the weathering process completely. It helps stabilise the rusted surface while maintaining the attractive appearance of the corten steel.
-
Owatrol Oil is suitable for most weathered corten steel products, including planters, water features, garden edging, sculptures and other decorative outdoor steel features. It is not recommended for fire bowls, fire pits or other surfaces exposed to direct heat, as high temperatures can cause the protective coating to deteriorate.
-
Owatrol Oil dries clear but typically enhances the natural appearance of weathered corten steel, giving it a slightly richer, deeper colour with a subtle "wet look" finish. It doesn't hide the steel's natural texture or character, but instead helps preserve the existing rust patina while providing a protective barrier.
As with any protective coating, we recommend testing on a small, inconspicuous area before treating the entire surface.

There isn't a fixed timescale because weathering depends on the climate and exposure to the elements. Wait until the steel has developed the rich rust patina you're happy with before applying Owatrol Oil. In wetter conditions this process is often faster, while using a rust accelerator can significantly reduce the time required.
