  • Corten steel is a metal alloy consisting of iron, to which copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium have been added. When exposed to the outside air, the material is covered with a protective layer of rust. This natural layer of rust forms the protection against further corrosion. This gives the planter a long lifespan.

    Specifications:

    • 5 year warranty.

    • Corten steel planters are very strong, wear-resistant, weather-resistant, low-maintenance and durable.

    • Including feet and drainage holes. This ensures that the planter floats a little above the ground (15 mm) and has optimal drainage.

    • Standard material thickness of corten steel is 2 mm. Other material thicknesses are also possible.

    • Products are delivered unrusted. The rusting process of corten steel takes about 4-5 months, depending on the weather conditions.

    • The rust can be fixed by applying Owatrol. This is a penetrating rust inhibitor that forms a protective anti-rust coating. Owatrol protects the planter and stops the rust on corten steel flaking off.

    • We do not recommend using corten steel within 2 km of a coastline. See our blog post “Corten Steel and Coastal Sites” for more info.

    Important points to note:

    • Products should be unpacked immediately upon receipt, so that any moisture between the packaging and the product is not trapped. This can cause irregular rust spots.

    • Ensure good drainage.

    • Do not use an overflow pipe; no excess water may remain in the corten steel planter. The material can then rust through due to a combination of oxygen and soil.

    • Do not use hydro grains: they retain moisture.

    • During the rusting process, rust water may come off the product.

    • The warranty will be void if you drill or grind in a manner not prescribed.

    PLANTING ADVICE:

    • Provide the bottom with a layer of pebbles Ø35 mm sorting (approx. 10 cm).

    • Place a water-permeable anti-root cloth over the pebbles.

    • Cover the anti-root cloth with soil that is suitable for your type of planting.

    • Do not use an overflow pipe; no water should remain in the corten steel planter.
