Growing up, I remember bees being everywhere. Hovering around bright petals, bumbling through lavender bushes and even sneaking sips from your sugary drinks if you weren’t vigilant enough. They were wonderfully noisy, busy little things and I was fascinated by them (still am).
Fast-forward a decade or so (& a few passport stamps), and during my travels around Europe, I’ve started noticing something off. The buzzing is quieter, the flowers feel lonelier… And it isn’t just in Europe. Every time I go back home to Brazil, it’s the same. Fewer bees. Fewer butterflies. Fewer signs of those tiny, vital workers who keep our ecosystems ticking along.
It all hits home pretty hard. So here at Rust & Roast, we decided to do something about it. And no, we’re not asking anyone to become a beekeeper overnight (unless you want to, go you 😍 - send us pics!). We’re simply asking you to plant a few wildflowers because the truth is, you REALLY can help save the bees! Right from your windowsill, garden or balcony.
And no, size doesn’t matter 👀… Whether you’ve got a whole lawn to spare or just a sunny ledge, every patch makes a difference.

The Right Mix for Bees (and Butterflies!)
If you're wondering what to plant, we’ve done some digging (pun intended). These two wildflower mixes are top notch. Great for pollinators and for the planet:
🐝 Boston Seeds – Bees & Butterfly Mix
This one’s a real winner. It’s packed with RHS approved wildflowers from their ‘plants for pollinators’ list (aka the gold standard for pollinators) and contains 24 different species to keep things blooming and buzzing. It’s got a blend of annuals for a splash of colour in year one and perennials to keep things going long-term. Expect bee favourites like borage, sainfoin and red clover. Basically… It’s a 5-star buffet for bees.

🌱 The Green Estate – Pictorial Meadows Pastel Mix
Now this one is gorgeous. Designed by landscape pros and backed by research, it offers a long flowering season and a dreamy pastel palette. Plus, the team behind it are all about low-maintenance, high-impact planting which is right up our street. It’s perfect if you want your wildflowers to do their thing with minimal faff, while still looking stunning. PLUS - Bees aren’t the only ones benefitting. Wildflower gardens also attract butterflies and other kinds of wonderful pollinators, making your patch a biodiverse paradise.
When to Sow Wildflowers?… Timing is Everything.
So, when do you start this bee-saving magic? There are two main planting windows:
March to April🍃: Spring sowing gives you a summer splash of colour, but hold onto your hats… the real bloom show happens the following spring. Think of it as planting hope. TRUST THE PROCESS!
September to October🍂: This is considered the best time to sow. Seeds establish over winter and burst into life as the warmer months return. Nature knows what she’s doing!
For the best wildflower success, sow your seeds in sunny spots. If your space is more shaded, go for a woodland wildflower mix. There is something for every corner.
And less faffy yet, no compost needed! Wildflowers love rough, unimproved soil. In fact, compost will just encourage grass to take over.
The Dangerous Buzzkill: Pesticides.
Unfortunately, bees 🐝 are still under threat! Some bee-killing pesticides, including certain neonicotinoids, have crept back into UK agriculture under emergency authorisations in recent years. These chemicals disrupt bees’ ability to navigate, forage and survive. Not great for the food chain = Not great for us!
But there is good news✨. By planting clean and beautiful wildflowers, we give bees a lifeline. Every patch of blooms is a safe haven, helping to rebuild ecosystems from the ground up!
Still picturing a scruffy meadow? Think again. A wildflower garden can be jaw-droppingly beautiful, even at scale. Think colour, texture, movement and that smell in the summer sun!

A Few Notes from the Garden…
🐦 Birds love wildflower seeds—cheeky little things! Keep an eye out, especially after sowing. Maybe plant a few extras for our feathered neighbours!
🌱 Look out for yellow rattle in your seed mix. It’s a semi-parasitic plant that weakens grass, giving your wildflowers extra space to breathe and bloom.
